Why Stainless Steel Doesn’t Rust: The Chromium Oxide Layer

Stainless steel is notrust-proofin the absolute sense. It isrust-resistantbecause of a thin, invisible layer that forms on its surface. Understanding how that layer works explains why some stainless parts rust and others do not, and it will save you from the classic mistake of welding stainless in the wrong environment.

The Passive Layer

All stainless grades contain at least 10.5 % chromium. When exposed to oxygen, chromium reacts to form a continuous, ultra-thin (1 – 5 nanometer) layer of chromium oxide, Cr₂O₃. This layer is what makes stainless “inoxydable”. It is self-healing: if you scratch the surface in air, exposed chromium immediately re-forms the oxide and seals the damage. Carbon steel has no such layer, so rust propagates through the whole section.

Why 304 Is Different from 316L

304 contains ~ 18 % Cr and ~ 8 % Dans. It is adequate for indoor use, freshwater and normal atmospheric exposure. 316L adds 2 – 2.5 % molybdenum, which stabilizes the oxide layer in chloride (salt) environments. WhenStainlessStill Rusts

The oxide layer needs oxygen to self-heal. It fails in three common situations:

  • Oxygen starvation: buried or immersed stainless (inside a sealed tank, under insulation) cannot re-form the layer. Pitting can start.
  • Chloride attack: salt, de-icing chemicals, pool water can break through the Cr₂O₃ layer locally. Once a pit starts, it propagates. 316L helps; in harsh coastal splash zones, 2205 or higher is needed.
  • Welding without proper shielding: welding in air, especially without argon backing, burns off chromium and leaves asensitizedheat-affected zone that rusts at the weld line. This is why 304L / 316L (low carbon) exist — L grades resist sensitization.

Practical Takeaways

Do not assume “inoxydable” means zero maintenance. Clean coastal installations periodically to remove salt residue. Do not weld stainless with a carbon-steel wire brush — embedded iron causes rust spots. Do not bury unprotected stainless in chloride-rich soil. For architectural and food-service jobs, 304 is fine; for marine and chemical splash, specify 316L from the start.
