1. Product Overview

The 7075-T6 Aluminum Round Bar is a high-strength, “aircraft-grade” aluminum alloy engineered for applications where superior strength-to-weight ratio and structural integrity are paramount . As a member of the 7000-series (aluminum-zinc-magnesium-copper alloy system), 7075 is renowned as one of the strongest commercially available aluminum alloys, delivering tensile strength comparable to many structural steels while maintaining the lightweight characteristics inherent to aluminum .

The T6 temper indicates that the material has undergone solution heat treatment followed by artificial aging, a process that achieves peak hardness and optimal mechanical properties . This makes the 7075-T6 aluminum round bar the preferred choice for mission-critical components across the aerospace, defense, automotive, and high-performance industrial sectors .

2. Key Features & Benefits

High Strength-to-Weight Ratio

7075-T6 delivers an exceptional balance of strength and lightness. With an ultimate tensile strength of 83 KSI (572 MPa) and a yield strength of 73 KSI (503 MPa), it provides the structural performance required for highly stressed applications while significantly reducing component weight .

Excellent Fatigue Resistance

The alloy withstands repeated stress cycles effectively, ensuring long service life under cyclic loading conditions commonly encountered in aerospace and high-performance mechanical systems .

Good Machinability

7075-T6 offers a machinability rating of approximately 70% (compared to 2011 alloy), enabling efficient turning, milling, drilling, and threading operations. It can be machined to tight tolerances with appropriate tooling and process control .

Superior Corrosion Resistance (with Treatment)

While the alloy’s high zinc content makes it more susceptible to corrosion than 6000-series alloys, proper surface treatments—such as anodizing, cladding (Alclad), or protective coatings—effectively mitigate environmental degradation .

Heat Treatable

The T6 temper is achieved through solution heat treatment and artificial aging, allowing for peak strength and hardness optimization .

9. Important Considerations

Machining Guidelines

7075-T6 has a machinability rating of approximately 70% of 2011 alloy . For automatic screw machine operations, 7075 in the T6 condition is rated between 75% and 85% of 2011 . Sharp tooling and proper coolant application are recommended to achieve optimal surface finishes and dimensional accuracy.

Weldability

Arc and gas welding are not recommended for 7075 aluminum due to its susceptibility to cracking and stress corrosion in the heat-affected zone . Spot or flash welding may be used in limited applications . For assemblies requiring joining, mechanical fastening or adhesive bonding are preferred alternatives.

Corrosion Protection

Due to its high zinc content, 7075-T6 has lower corrosion resistance than 6000-series alloys . For exposure to corrosive or high-moisture environments, protective anodizing, cladding (Alclad), or organic coatings are strongly recommended . The T6 (peak aging) temper is most susceptible to stress corrosion cracking; over-aged tempers such as T7351 offer improved SCC resistance at a moderate strength reduction .

Material Certification

Full material test reports (MTRs) with lot traceability are available upon request .
