Aluminum Sheet Thickness Guide: How to Specify the Right Gauge
Specifying aluminum sheet thickness sounds simple, but it is where many buyers get tripped up. Gauge numbers, millimeters, “folha” versus “placa” boundaries and the difference between nominal and actual thickness all matter. Get it wrong and the part either cannot be formed or costs more than it should.
Sheet vs Plate: Where Is the Line?
In most commercial practice, aluminum under 6.0 mm is called sheet and 6.0 mm and above is called plate. This is a practical convention, not a strict standard, but it matters when you ask a supplier for a quote because pricing, tooling and lead time differ. Our sheet range includes 1060 folha, 3003 folha e 5052 folha; thicker structural and aerospace stock is listed under our 6061 T6 plate e 7075 T6 plate.
Common Gauges and Their Typical Uses

Nominal vs Actual Thickness
Aluminum sheet is sold by nominal thickness, but actual thickness varies by gauge tolerance. A “2.0 milímetros” sheet can be 1.88 – 2.04 mm in commercial quality. If your part is CNC-machined to a tight dimension, specify both nominal and allowed tolerance (for example, 3.0 ± 0.10 milímetros) and we will confirm the mill’s capability. For tread (diamond) placa, remember the listed thickness usually refers to the base thickness, not the peak of the pattern.
What Else to Specify
Beyond gauge, buyers should also specify: alloy and temper (1060 H14, 3003 H24, 5052 H32, 6061 T6, etc.), width and length (standard sheets are 1220 × 2440 mm or 1500 × 3000 milímetros), surface finish (mill finish, escovado, anodizado, PVC protected) and packaging (pallet, bundle, anti-corrosion paper). Sending a single number — “give me 2 mm aluminum” — leaves too much room for misinterpretation.
