Aluminum Plate Grade Guide: 1060, 3003, 5052, 6061, 5083, 7075 Explained

Aluminum plate is available in many grades, and choosing the right one determines the strength, Korrosionsbeständigkeit, weldability and cost of your project. This guide explains the six most common aluminum plate grades – 1060, 3003, 5052, 6061, 5083 Und 7075 – covering their chemical composition, mechanical properties and typical applications, so you can quickly identify which grade suits your use.

1060 Aluminiumteller: Pure Aluminum for Conductivity

1060 belongs to the 1xxx series with a minimum aluminum content of 99.6%. It offers excellent electrical and thermal conductivity, outstanding corrosion resistance and good formability, but has low mechanical strength. It is widely used for electrical bus bars, chemical storage tanks, capacitor casings and decorative applications where purity matters more than strength.

3003 Aluminiumteller: The Workhorse Alloy

3003 is strengthened by manganese and is the most widely used general-purpose aluminum alloy. It has moderate strength, good formability, excellent weldability and good corrosion resistance. Common uses include roofing and siding, cooking utensils, Wärmetauscher, fuel tanks and general sheet metal work.

5052 Aluminiumteller: Marine-Grade Corrosion Resistance

5052 is a magnesium alloy with the highest strength among non-heat-treatable grades. It provides excellent salt-water corrosion resistance, good fatigue strength and outstanding weldability, making it the preferred choice for marine applications, fuel tanks, pressure vessels, hydraulic tubes and appliance panels.

6061 Aluminiumteller: Structural All-Rounder

6061 is a heat-treatable aluminum-magnesium-silicon alloy. In the T6 temper it reaches a tensile strength of about 290 MPa, combining high strength with good weldability, machinability and corrosion resistance. It is widely used for structural frames, truck bodies, Maschinenteile, bicycle components and general fabrication.

5083 Aluminiumteller: Shipbuilding Champion

5083 is a high-strength magnesium-manganese alloy specially developed for shipbuilding. It retains high strength after welding and offers the best combination of strength and corrosion resistance in marine environments. It is the standard grade for hull plates, offshore platforms, pressure vessels and cryogenic tanks.

7075 Aluminiumteller: Aerospace-Grade Strength

7075 is strengthened with zinc and is one of the strongest aluminum alloys available, with a tensile strength exceeding 570 MPa in the T6 temper. It is used where maximum strength-to-weight ratio is required: aircraft structures, missile parts, high-performance molds, rock-climbing equipment and precision machinery.

How to Choose the Right Grade

  • Need maximum corrosion resistance or purity? Choose 1060.
  • Need a low-cost general-purpose alloy? Choose 3003.
  • Working in marine or salt-water environments? Choose 5052 oder 5083.
  • Need high strength with good weldability? Choose 6061-T6.
  • Need the highest strength-to-weight ratio? Choose 7075-T6.
  • Not sure? Send us your application details and our engineers will recommend the most cost-effective grade.
