Tube selection starts with the shape, not the material. Round, square and rectangular hollow sections all carry load, but they do it differently, look different, and cost different amounts. Most buyers default to round tube by habit; that is rarely the right choice for furniture, frames or architecture.

Round Tube: The Default for Pressure and Structure

Round tube has equal strength in every direction, distributes internal pressure evenly, and has the lowest drag for fluids. Square Tube: The Choice for Frames and Clean Look

Square tube has flat sides that sit flush against panels and plates. It is the standard for machine frames, racks, furniture posts, sign frames and fence posts. A square tube welded to a plate makes a cleaner joint than a round tube because only four fillet welds are needed instead of curved contact. Rectangular Tube: Flat Faces for Bending and Mounting

Rectangular tube has one strong axis and one weak axis. It is the choice when you want a slim profile that is strong in bending (like a lintel, a beam or a handrail cross-section). Rectangular tube also mounts flush against walls and floors better than round. Use it horizontally where bending load dominates.

Specifying Hollow Sections

For round: give OD × wall × length (e.g. 60.3 × 3.91 × 6000 mm). For square: give outer dimension × wall × length (e.g. 50 × 50 × 3.0). For rectangular: give width × height × wall. Also state material (Q235B / Q355B / 304 / 316L), standard (ASTM A500 / EN 10219 / GB), and surface (black / galvanized / 2B).
