What Is a Steel Flat Bar? Использование, Sizes and Buying Tips
Flat bar (also called flat iron or rectangular bar) is one of the simplest and most useful steel sections: a rectangular strip of steel with no taper, no flanges, just width × thickness × length. It is the starting material for brackets, gussets, machine parts and cutter stock.
Common Grades and Their Uses

Buying Tips
- Specify the exact width × thickness × length — “flat bar” without dimensions is ambiguous.
- Ask for black, bright or peeled surface depending on whether you will machine or paint it.
- For machined parts, specify tolerance (h11 or tighter) and confirm mill test certificate.
- Outdoor use: galvanize or specify stainless.
