O steel floor plate — also called checker plate, tread plate or durbar plate — is the standard anti-slip solution for walkways, stairs, platforms, vehicle decks and industrial flooring. This guide covers the types of Q235B steel floor plate, the pattern types, specifications, and how to choose the right thickness.
What Is Steel Floor Plate?
Steel floor plate is a hot-rolled steel plate with a raised pattern rolled into one surface. The most common pattern is the diamond (lozenge) pattern, which provides grip in all directions. Chinese production follows GB/T 33974 for patterned plate, and the base grade is usually Q235B to GB/T 700. The pattern height is normally 1.0 – 2.5 mm depending on the base thickness.

Pattern types available: diamond (most common), round bean, and flat-topped. The diamond pattern is recommended for pedestrian and light-vehicle traffic; deeper patterns are available for heavy-duty ramps.
Applications
Steel floor plate is used for stair treads, catwalks, mezzanine floors, truck and trailer decks, scaffolding platforms, machine platforms, cable trenches, ramps and anti-slip covers. How to Choose Floor Plate
- For pedestrian walkways and stairs: 3 – 5 mm base thickness is typical.
- For vehicle decks and heavy ramps: 6 – 10 mm and above.
- Confirm the pattern direction if the plate will be cut into stair treads.
- Decide the surface: black, uns cu ulei, or painted (primer / anti-rust).
- For outdoor use, ask about hot-dipped galvanized steel sheet options to extend service life.
