Steel Sheet Metal Fabrication: ການຕັດ, ງໍ, Welding and Finishing
Steel Sheet Metal Fabrication: ການຕັດ, ງໍ, Welding and Finishing
Sheet metal fabrication is the process of turning flat steel sheet into finished parts: ຝາປິດ, ວົງເລັບ, ໂຕເຄື່ອງ, panels, cabinets and machine guards. The process chain is cutting → bending → welding → finishing, and each step has cost and quality implications that most buyers do not understand. This guide explains the four process steps, compares the common methods, and shows how to design parts that are cheap to fabricate without sacrificing strength or appearance.
Step 1: Cutting — Laser, Plasma and Shear
Cutting is the first step: flat sheet is cut to the blank shape. The three common methods are laser cutting, plasma cutting and shear cutting. Laser cutting is the most precise — ±0.1 mm, narrow kerf, clean edge, and it cuts complex shapes. It is the default for precision enclosures and high-value parts. Plasma cutting is faster and cheaper for thick plate (over 6 ມມ), but the edge is rough and tolerance is ±1 mm. Shear cutting is the cheapest for straight cuts — it cuts strips and blanks quickly, but it cannot do complex shapes. For most sheet metal work under 4 ມມ, laser cutting is the standard. ເບິ່ງຂອງພວກເຮົາ ແຖບແບນ Q235B.
| Method | ຄວາມຫນາ | ຄວາມທົນທານ | Cost index |
|---|---|---|---|
| ເລເຊີ | 0.5 – 25 ມມ | ±0.1 mm | 1.0 |
| Plasma | 3 – 50 ມມ | ±1.0 mm | 0.5 |
| Shear | 0.5 – 12 ມມ | ±0.5ມມ | 0.2 |
| Waterjet | 0.5 – 100 ມມ | ±0.2 mm | 1.5 |
Step 2: Bending — Press Brake and Minimum Bend Radius
Bending forms the flat blank into a 3D shape. The press brake is the standard tool: it clamps the sheet and bends it over a die. The key design rule is the minimum bend radius. For mild steel, the minimum inside bend radius is 1 × material thickness. ສໍາລັບ 2 mm sheet, the minimum bend radius is 2 ມມ. If you specify a radius smaller than that, the material cracks on the outside of the bend. The other rule is the minimum flange length: the flange must be at least 4 × material thickness plus the bend radius, or the press brake cannot form it. ສໍາລັບ 2 mm sheet, the minimum flange is 10 ມມ. Design your part with these rules in mind to avoid rework.
Step 3: Welding — MIG, TIG and Spot
Welding joins the bent parts into a finished assembly. MIG (GMAW) is the fastest and cheapest for mild steel enclosures. TIG (GTAW) is slower but produces cleaner welds for stainless and aluminum. Spot welding is used for thin sheet where the weld bead must be hidden. The key design consideration is weld access: every weld must be reachable by the torch, so you cannot design a box where the internal weld is out of reach. Also, welding introduces heat distortion — the part warps. For precision parts, you must either weld and then machine, or use fixtures to hold the part during welding. Design for welding by leaving clearance, avoiding enclosed corners, and minimizing weld length.
Step 4: Finishing — Powder Coat, Paint and Galvanize
Finishing is the final step that determines the appearance and corrosion resistance. Powder coating is the standard for enclosures: it is durable, comes in any color, and costs about $15 – 30 per square meter. Wet painting is cheaper but less durable. Hot-dip galvanizing is used for outdoor structural parts that must last 30+ ປີ, but it changes dimensions and cannot be used on precision parts. Anodizing is for aluminum, not steel. For stainless, the surface is usually brushed or polished, no coating needed. The key: finish before assembly if possible, because coating the inside of an enclosure is difficult and wasteful.
Design for Manufacturability (DFM)
The cheapest sheet metal part is the one that requires no rework. Design rules: keep the sheet thickness uniform across the part (1.5 ມມ ຫຼື 2.0 mm is standard); use standard bend radii; avoid embossing, louvers and hardware inserts unless necessary; use the same hole size across the part to reduce tool changes; and design for laser cutting rather than plasma. For large batches, consider progressive stamping — it is cheaper per part than laser + ງໍ. For small batches under 50 pieces, ເລເຊີ + ງໍ + MIG + powder coat is the standard process chain.
