Seamless vs Welded Steel Pipe: Which Do You Actually Need?
“How do I choose between seamless and welded pipe?” is one of the most common questions in steel purchasing. The answer is pressure, temperature, wall tolerance and budget — not a single brand preference.
Welded (ERW) Pipe
Electric-resistance-welded pipe is made from coil rolled into a tube and welded longitudinally. It is cheaper, straighter, more dimensionally consistent in light walls, and available in long random lengths. Seamless Pipe
Seamless pipe is pierced from a solid billet. It has no weld seam, which makes it the right choice for high pressure, high temperature, hydraulic and oil-and-gas service. It costs more and is usually ordered in shorter random lengths. See our 20# seamless pipe and 304 seamless tube.

Rule of Thumb
If the application is structural or low-pressure conveyance, welded saves money. If the pipe carries fluid under high pressure or at elevated temperature, specify seamless and ask for mill test certificates.
