Carbon Steel vs Stainless Steel: Кошт, Corrosion and Application Guide

Carbon Steel vs Stainless Steel: Кошт, Corrosion and Application Guide

Carbon steel and stainless steel are both iron-based, but they are engineered for completely different jobs. Carbon steel is cheap, strong and rusts. Stainless steel is expensive, corrosion-resistant and slightly weaker. Choosing between them is not a matter of “which is better” — it is a matter of matching the material to the environment and the budget. This guide compares the two on cost, сіла, карозія, machinability and welding, so you can specify the right one without over-spending or under-designing.

The Core Difference: Chromium Content

The difference is chromium. Carbon steel has less than 0.4 % carbon and negligible chromium. Stainless steel has at least 10.5 % хрому, which forms a self-healing chromium oxide layer on the surface that prevents rust. That oxide layer is why stainless does not rust in air — it is not “нержавеючая” because it is special, it is stainless because the chromium actively protects the surface. У вугляродзістай сталі такога пласта няма, so it rusts in air, and the rust flakes off and exposes more steel. Глядзіце наш Плоская планка Q235B і 304 ліст.

Кошт: The 4× Premium

Stainless steel costs 3.5 каб 4.5 times more than carbon steel per kilogram. А 3 mm Q235B sheet might cost $0.80/kg, while a 3 мм 304 sheet costs $3.50/kg. For large structural projects, this difference is enormous — a 100-tonne steel structure in carbon steel costs $80,000, while the same structure in 304 stainless costs $350,000. The rule: use carbon steel wherever corrosion is handled by painting or galvanizing, and reserve stainless for environments where paint or galvanizing will not last. For indoor structures, carbon steel painted is the standard. For outdoor structures, hot-dip galvanized carbon steel lasts 30+ years and costs 1/4 of stainless.

Сіла: Carbon Wins on Yield

For the same thickness, carbon steel (Q235B) і 304 stainless have similar yield strength — 235 MPa vs 215 МПа. Carbon steel is slightly stronger. But stainless can be work-hardened: cold-worked 304 reaches 500+ MPa tensile strength. For structural applications, the strength difference is not the deciding factor — corrosion and cost are. For high-strength applications, carbon steel Q355B (355 МПа) is cheaper than stainless 304. For corrosion-resistant high-strength, stainless 316L or duplex stainless is the answer, but it costs 5 – 6× carbon steel.

Карозія: The Deciding Factor

In dry indoor air, carbon steel painted lasts 20+ гадоў. In outdoor air, carbon steel rusts within months, and needs painting every 3 – 5 гадоў. In coastal or salt spray, carbon steel rusts within 1 – 2 гадоў. Нержавеючая 304 lasts 10+ years in outdoor air, and 316L lasts 20+ years in coastal air. The decision tree: if the part is indoor and painted, use carbon steel. If the part is outdoor and dry, use galvanized carbon steel. If the part is outdoor and wet or coastal, выкарыстоўваць 304 або 316 л. If the part is in contact with food or chemicals, use stainless. If the part is underground, use galvanized or coated carbon steel — stainless in soil corrodes due to sulfate-reducing bacteria.

Machinability and Welding

Carbon steel machines like butter — it cuts cleanly, chips break, and tools last. Stainless work-hardens: every cut hardens the surface, making the next cut harder. Tool life for stainless is 1/3 каб 1/5 of carbon steel. For high-volume machining, carbon steel is much cheaper. For welding, carbon steel welds with any process, no preheat needed. Stainless requires TIG or MIG with stainless filler, and careful heat control to avoid carbide precipitation. Welding stainless is slower and requires more skilled labor.

When to Use Stainless Over Carbon

Use stainless when: the part is in coastal or salt spray, the part contacts food or potable water, the part must be cleanable (фармацэўтычны, медыцынскі), the part is exposed to chemicals, or the part must remain maintenance-free for 20+ гадоў. Use carbon steel when: the part is indoor, the part can be painted or galvanized, the part is structural and cost-sensitive, or the part is underground. The most common mistake is specifying stainless for everything “just to be safe” — this adds 300 – 400 % to material cost without any functional benefit. The reverse mistake is using carbon steel in a coastal environment and repainting every 3 гадоў, which costs more over 20 years than stainless.
